On summer equinox of 985AD a Svear Thorhall son of Dagfinn Abjornson was born at Vargarde, a coastal village near Valsegrarde. As child Thorhall learned the ways of the sea, the hunt and the axe.

On 1004AD Thorhall killed Olav son of Joalf Jarl of Vargarde and several of Olav's retainers in a conflict over the price of cattle. Of freeman birth Thorhall could not muster enough support at the local thing and was exiled for three years. Thorhall fled Sweden choosing the Varangian way of life.

Following rumors of great wealth to the south Thorhall traveled overland to Byzantine, the land of milk and honey. Here Thorhall joined a rag-tag band of mercenaries know as the Wolfpack. Thorhall and the Wolfpack quickly distinguished themselves in battle: destroying their enemies, driving their foes before them, and hearing the laminations of the women.
