Born Asakura Takeshi to a small, but noble samurai clan in northern Japan, Akimoto grew up wanting to become a Buddhist monk. However, to maintain his family's honour, he dutifully became a samurai. He served his lord faithfully until one night, an opposing lord sent an assassin to kill him. Failing to protect his lord, he shaved his head to show his dishonour. Seeing that now he could do as he pleased, he took the name Akimoto, which means Bright Beginning.

Akimoto wandered around Japan for a while as a ronin, a masterless samurai, traveling to various temples and acting as a sword for hire. Upon hearing of a trade ship setting sail for China, Akimoto snuck aboard. After arriving in China, Akimoto went off to travel Asia and eventually Europe. One night, he stumbled upon a band of mercenaries who called themselves the Wolfpack. After staying out of their sight until he learned their strange and foreign tongue, Akimoto eventually introduced himself to them. Their leader, a strange man named Argyle, took him under his wing and showed him how things worked in their group. Eventually, Akimoto grew to fit in with the roving band of mercenaries, calling them his brothers and sisters.
